It is a typical docuementary as if is telling the audience knowledge about the Pompeii using a voice over. However i think the drama in the docuementary is different to the usual as it is more to the drama side than docuementary.
Pompeii: The Last Day This is a typical expository documentary It has all the typical conventions such as: The dubbed voice or "voice of God" Re-enactments Pompeii as it looks today Fact & Fiction within the documentary A film style (actors)
The documentary has many typical conventions such as; the narrators voice (voice of god), Reconstruction of past events, an added element of drama, has many facts that are used with fiction and areas of reconstruction.
These are the main reasons why the documentary is very typical and therefore makes it a good documentary. The type of documentary is a drama documentary and creates a very effective drama documentary.
The conventions of the documentary genre shown in this clip are: -the voice of God -reconstructions of events -elements of film, with the use of actors and a story -Real life footage (showing Pompeii now) -Facts
This documentary is not typical as it has elements of film, with the reconstruction of the event actors are being used, along with a story and therefore they would have a script. Also the start of the documentary shows clips from the reconstruction set out in a trailer style.

Voice Over (voice of God)- a narrator to help tell the facts and move the documentary along
Facts and real artifacts from that day- shows the extent of the damage which was caused by the events and give audience more knowledge
Modern day footage of Pompeii and some old archive footage- shows you the difference between the place since the event
Although the conventions are typical to that of conventional documentaries, the way it is presented is made as if you were watching a drama programme on television, making it more like a drama documentary then a typical expository.
This documentary has these conventions: -voice over -drama documentary (reenactments) -modern footage of Pompeii ruins. -factual information.
This is not like a typical documentary as it feels like you are watching a drama rather than a real documentary, the only points which are typical to a documentary is the factual information given with some of the actual footage of artifacts. the re creations of the scenes from the past are made out to seem like a drama program instead of an informative show but when it skips to a scene filmed at modern day pompeii there is much more factual information supplied by the narrator making this part more typical to a documentary.
The expository style of this documentary gives these conventions:
- Narration/Voice Of God - tells the information and story of the documentary.
- Re-enactments of history - the use of actors to depict the history, but also to tell a story rather than just explain a point.
- Not just fact - some fiction is introduced to entertain the viewers.
-Clips of recent footage - these show the modern day pompeii to the viewers to extend the drama.
Although the documentary is expository, it could be debated due to the amount of drama used in its filming. It runs more like a drama than a documentary, but follows the guidelines of a documentary.

I think it is a typical documentary as it contains a lot of drama and narration, taking the audience on a journey.
I think that Pompeii, The Last Day is a good documentary and I will consider some of it's aspects when creating my own.
